Your workstation probably has SATA or SAS hard drive and needs a special driver that you need to load just as Windows setup starts. It will ask you to hit F6 to install additional drivers or 3rd party drivers. Of course you will need to download the correct driver from Dell first. You could try something else too.in the BIOS, find the section for the SATA or SAS controller and change the mode to 'Compatibility'. Run through the Windows setup and once you are done with the setup go back in the BIOS and switch it back. I had to do this one of my workstations that I installed server on. Hi, I too have just installed Windows Server 2003 - ent on a dell precision 690.
You most likely have the SAS 5 driver. You have to download the dell SAS 5/ir integrated driver from the windows XP driver sets. When you start the installation, press F6 to select and additional driver. Insert the floppy disk you created with file you downloaded. When windows server 2003 loads the driver, it is going to tell you that you have provided a driver which is newer than the one provided with windows and will tell you it recommends that you go with the one provided. Select use the driver from the disk and everything will go fine from there. I have just solved this problem.
I found the SAS Raid driver for a Dell 690 in the XP x64 section of the Dell support site at this link. I installed the OS on the AHCI controller from Intel and got their 64 bit driver for 632xESB2 but could not see my mirrored drives on the SAS controller I was able to install the drivers above from device manager but otherwise you would need to F6 on the blue screen during the first install as mentioned above. If you'd like me t send the driovers email me at [email protected]. Downloading the drivers from the site, and pressing F6, will allow you to install. However, prior to doing this, you need the latest version of the BIOS (A04 at the time this was written), and the latest SAS 5/iR Integrated firmware.
These need to be installed prior to installing the O/S. If you are using the Adaptec SATA RAID Controller, you have have to go to Adaptec's site to get their firmware, and their drivers.
Once all this is installed, you will also need to install the Intel Chipset drivers from the Dell support site. Then, you will need the latest NVidia drivers for the Quadro FX 550 (assuming this is the card you have). Also, the SoundBlaster XFi drivers. And, after you get all this installed, and install the updates, then Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, you will be where I am. That is, trying to install Visual Studio 2005 to finish up installation of this development box for SharePoint development. Note: SharePoint does not support XP or Vista, so you have to use Server 2003.
And guess what, there is a problem with some of the drivers. Not sure which one.
It seems to be the video drivers, but I can't be sure. Sometimes we get blue screens, and sometimes, the screen throws artifacts and the machine freezes. We have done 3 complete, and very clean, re-installations paying close attention to what we install.

However, the end result is that Windows Server 2003 runs fine until you run an application on it. Then, at some point (non-repeatable, but consistently) it explodes or freezes. Basically, the box is un-usable under Windows Server 2003.
